The Fencer - Character Spotlight

Image
In Melee we T(h)rust Coming in at a whopping 6 melee, the Fencer immediately secures her place as the highest melee stat model in the game. This is also supplemented by a fantastic arcane 5 and a superb evade of -2. As for her other stats, the Fencer has the traditional faeries melee range of 1", 6 wounds, and an incredible 5 energy. As great as these numbers are, it's from the Fencer's horde of passive abilities that we see how this faerie designed for melee will operate. Firstly, she has the standard 'Weakling' as is common with most faeries. As normal this can be removed by Wasp's 'Rage' ability, but weakling isn't usually an issue for this faeries as we'll see when we look at her signature later. Unusually for a faerie, the Fencer has some damage reduction, specifically an excellent -2 against all piercing damage received. Although this seems oddly specific it is very useful in tangent with her signature. On the damage-dealing front, the Fen...

Foxglove - Character Spotlight

Image
Flimsy Faerie FIrespitter Like most faeries, Foxglove has a poor amount of health but excellent energy and evade stat. They also possess the ever-present weakling passive ability that plagues most faeries and a melee range of 1". From here though it's all good news for Foxglove with a plethora of excellent abilities for keeping them and their friends alive as well as putting some serious magical damage onto the enemy. This excellent damage comes primarily from their 'Atrophy' ability which deals a fantastic 2X Magical damage. It is however held back by a less than great 3 arcane, but this isn't the entire truth for this tricksy fae. Firstly, they have 'Trickster' which will seriously mess with your opponent when they decide whether to call a bluff or not. Secondly, there are many ways to boost the number of cards drawn by other means. In a rogue troupe, this can come from Muridae's passive arcane boost with 'Honour amongst thieves' and Creep...

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall, Who's The Rogue(est) Of Them All - Dominion Rogue Troupe Spotlight

Image
The rogue keyword has been around since the very start of Moonstone. Initially, it was limited to a few faeries and didn't really have any synergies. At this point in the game though, it's a fully fleshed-out trait with many great models of multiple different races. The latest Dominion box has granted this trait two more models with the gun-toting Claudia Duvel and the devious Creep. So what sorts of troupes can be built around this keyword and how does it operate? Ratman Muridae is a character you will likely want to make use of in all your rogue troupes. With 'Honour Amongst Thieves' he will be able to support your entire troupe by just staying moderately close to them. The +1 arcane stat is hugely helpful to the rest of your rogues as all other rogues have arcane abilities and very good ones at that! His other passive abilities are some damage reduction for magical and slicing against him and a buff to his own piercing damage. The additional piercing damage won't...

Vespa - Character Spotlight

Image
I like big bugs and I cannot lie When looking at a faeries stat card, three things are normally expected: 6 or less health, -2 evade and weakling/feeble. Vespa by comparison ignores all of these basic rules and brings some very unique stats and skills when compared to the rest of the faeries. In fact, her stats more closely resemble those found on a human stat card with the added benefit of some weird faerie abilities and the faerie trait itself! To continue her theme of not sticking to traditional faerie stats, Vespa has a relatively low melee stat, but a high melee range and damage thanks to 'Stinger'. As her melee stat is not as high as other faeries she will not always find the card she needs or crit. However, when she does successfully play a: rising attack, thrust or falling swing (thanks to her piercing falling swing signature) she will deal an exceptionally large amount of damage. This isn't the end of her melee abilities though as she has a couple of faerie tricks ...

Feeble Faeries and How to Fizzlepop Them - Faerie Counter strategy

Image
Faeries are one of the most evasive types of character in the game. With brilliant evade and superb signatures they can often evade most damage and melee engagements. They also possess huge energy stockpiles which means lots of reaction steps to get in and out of position as well as additional melee cards for more reliable signatures. So how can these winged pests be best dealt with? Here are five tips and tricks to help all factions and troupes deal with these malicious menaces! Don't Target Them It might sound counter-intuitive but not targetting faeries is often the best chance to hit them. If a faerie is not targeted directly they have no chance to use their signature moves or great evade stat. One of the best examples of this is the 'Foul gases' ability found on Beaky Bobby and Doug the Flatulent. With no target, this active ability will not have to draw any cards and will deal 2 unavoidable damage to the flimsy faeries. There are also some abilities that draw cards bu...

A Goblin, a Revenant & a Faerie Walk into a Bar - Belladonna Combo Troupe Spotlight

Image
With more models than ever in the game, the number of strange and weird combos has soared. One such bizarre combo involves the unlikely combination of a goblin, a spirit and a faerie, three models that up until now would never be seen together. Although it can be quite unreliable it can still be very entertaining to get working and can lead to a troupe with a very unique playstyle. The first thing we need for this combo is a goblin, specifically one that can bring back slain models. There's not much else to discuss here until we see the other two models. The only thing to note is that he will be making good use of 'Reanimate'. B ut without further ado, let's continue. The next model immediately makes very little sense, why bring a model that can't be slain alongside a model whose main purpose is to revive slain models? Because he has an ability called 'Visions of the future'! Once again this doesn't immediately make sense, why inflict catastrophes on the...

Butterfingers - Character Spotlight

Image
I can't believe it's not Butter(fingers) Recently I've not been able to get many moonstone games so I've been at a lack of ideas for articles. However, on the discord* recently, a discussion about Butterfingers and how useful he is has got me inspired to write again! So how useful is Butterfingers, is he an auto-drop or an auto-include and what does he do? The first thing to note about Butterfingers is his brilliant arcane and standard faerie evade. These help him exceed at range, making him both accurate with his arcane abilities and hard for his opponents to hit with their abilities. 'Fizzle-pop' is a great ability with this all in mind. Despite its low damage of X, arcane 5 means it will hit very reliably and so is great for finishing off low health models. The second part of 'Fizzle-pop' is also very useful for Butterfingers, allowing him to push back anyone hit by this ability an inch. As well as providing excellent control options to interfere with...

Gwendoline - Character Spotlight

Image
Push and pull Unlike a lot of models in moonstone, Gwendoline doesn't have any abilities that jump out as overly powerful or strong. To compound this, the abilities in question aren't even low on energy and instead cost relatively large sums of energy. Despite this, I'd still count this as one of my favourite models in the game as well as a strong one. Gwendoline is, for the most part, a well rounded support model, with perhaps a slight skew to repositioning. So rather than harvesting, killing, or directly pursuing victory, she will be assisting others in your troupe. Her first ability, and only active ability, is some arcane deck manipulation. Within Leshavult this will likely not see much use as there are far better options for this with models such as Danica and Kavanagh. For Dominion, 'Scry' is the only way to manipulate the arcane deck which is worth noting. Despite this, Gwendoline's other abilities are usually far more useful and will see a lot more u...

Commonwealth & Dominion Overviews & First Boxes - Starting Moonstone

Image
Although the starter box is a great start to the game of moonstone, many might want to start collecting a different way. Y ou may, for example, fancy a troupe that's not available in the starter set. There are currently 2 factions available in moonstone with each faction containing a few races that are commonly associated with that faction. Two such examples are Gnomes commonly associated with the Commonwealth and Faeries who mostly belong in Dominion. However, so long as models share the same faction then they can be used together irrespective of race. This means it is possible to mix goblins and faeries or gnomes and humans. So long as the cards have the same symbol in the top right, they can be used together. Despite this, collecting one race of models can often help with learning the game. So it is often not a bad idea to start collecting 'a race' as opposed to a faction. With this in mind, what are the 2 factions and what races are they generally comprised of? Common...
